Countdown to Beijing Olympics

// August 9th, 2008 // No Comments » // Yngling

This is a pretty amazing update to write as we begin the last leg of the journey to the China Beijing Olympics. I have just come home (to the Village) from the Qingdao Family Lounge where the team members who couldn’t attend the Opening due to their schedules of racing or preference watched the Opening. There was a great fun vibe in the room as the Aussie team enjoyed each others company with family and friends.

On the Yngling front we have;
- Passed measurement which was a bit of a lengthy process
- Been out sailing on the practice race day but didn’t race due to no wind
- Had plenty of meals in the village dinning hall
- Worked out how to use the laundry
- Battled the gym to get onto an exercise bike
- Been out of the “Village Bubble” to get our nails done in Aussie colours along with gold metallic toes.

As a team we are all loving the experience of the Games and having a lot of fun. We are feeling confident that we have ticketed all the boxes with our Rig, Sails, Boat, Skills, and Communication. Now its time to get out there and play our cards.

Thankyou once again for all the support over the years and I look forward to seeing you all on the other side.

Yngling European Championships

// May 11th, 2008 // No Comments » // Yngling

Currently the team is in Riva Lake Garda for the Yngling Open Spring European Championships. As this was an open regatta Adrian our coach sailed onboard the boat in Karyn position while she went back to Australia to visit her family and attend the Yachting Australia Gala on behalf of the team.

During this regatta it was really valuable for the team to have Adrian actually sailing onboard the boat, he was able to help Angela and myself with lots of different aspects of racing. We ended up winning the regatta which is great as this gives us confidence into the next lot of racing.

After Hyeres regatta the team all had a short break going there separate ways to have a look at Europe. I decided after 3 years of doing Hyeres regatta in France that I probably should see the rest of the country. So I jumped onboard the band wagon of the windsurfer program and did a leg of the Tour de France ‘Nimes to Narbonne’160km on my road bike. It was really fun and a great way to see all the small towns in southern France. We then drove to Biarritz and then to Brest, I jumped onboard a train to Paris became a true tourist for two days and then met the rest of the team in Lake Garda.

The plan is to now drive to Holland for a small open regatta before the main event in Medemblik ‘Holland Regatta’. We then head off to China for some more training before home in June.

Thanks again to all the ongoing support from Yachting Australia, Australian Olympic Committee, Sandringham Yacht
Club and Veolia.

Silver at Yngling Worlds

// February 17th, 2008 // No Comments » // Yngling

Twenty eight boats competed over six days to decide the Yngling Women’s World Champion, at the last World Championship before the Olympics this August.

We, the Audi / Hamilton Island Australian Team, had a solid start in fairly strong wind, and backed this up with consistent placings on the remaining days. With the points being extremely close, we had to finish within 2 places of Germany in the Medal Race to hold on to our second place. We managed to do this, and so secured the silver medal.

Making the Medal Race (Top Ten) was our goal- not counting on a podium finish in our second major international regatta as team! A focus on speed, smart racing and our own processes enabled us to handle the variety of conditions (5 knots up to 30 knots) and mix it up with the World’s best teams.

We congratulate Team Great Britain, for their World Championship title two years running. We now head back to Australia for a short time to regroup and see our families before we embark on a three month racing schedule in Europe and China.

Once again thanks to everyone for their encouragements and congratulations, especially the sponsors, AOC and management of the Australian Sailing Team.

Enjoy the photos, and stay tuned for a new website very soon.
